Author Squad Classes

All of our classes are divided by readiness instead of age. Parents and teachers will work together to place children in the most appropriate class. (View class calendar.)

Babblers - In these classes, we help children develop a love for books. The children begin to understand that books are important and special. We'll go over some basic psychology to help parents, and we'll teach the children about concepts of print. The books we make will be used to preserve memories (tiny hand prints) and to teach children about their families (especially out-of-town family members).

Scribblers - These classes are for children who have just started being able to write letters. The books we make in these classes will feature the children's art work, and the parents will type what the children say. We will be working on developing vocabulary in these classes.

Doodlers - This level is for children who are writing sentences. Parents will be taught about these components of reading as well as activities to do with their children to strengthen these important skills. The children will use their prior knowledge and experiences to write their own stories.

Storytellers - These classes are designed for students are creating and publishing original stories. The lessons will teach students about the writing process. The students will interact with each other to improve their stories. Teachers will discuss educational trends and developmental milestones with parents. Artists - These classes will focus on the development of creative illustrations. Teachers will demonstrate the different techniques used in popular children's books. Parents will learn how to help their children practice these techniques.

Writers -The teachers will discuss how the author makes decisions about genre, voice, and style based on the purpose of the writing. Parents will continue to get tips on how they can help their children be successful.

Illustrators - Teachers will help students develop their own unique skills and techniques. Parents will learn about the opportunities available for artistic students.

Authors - Students must be invited to join this class. They must be experienced with the Author Squad software and process. Gifted writers should submit samples of their work if they think they are ready for this class. Teachers will provide resources for parents who are interested in formally publishing their children's work.

Journalists - A group of members meet to design and publish the Author Squad newsletter. They review member stories as well as other books they have read. They provide photographs as well as stories about local events.

New Member Workshops - New members as well as prospective members are encouraged to attend a new member workshop. Teachers explain the classes and services offered. They help with placement questions. They also teach the students about how the process works.

Friends and Family Workshops - Individuals pay a one time fee to make a gift for a child or friend. Teachers will provide guidance to help adults make a personalized book for any occasion.

Teacher Workshops - Classroom teachers are encouraged to bring in student work at this time. Author Squad teachers will help them assemble, print, and bind books for their classrooms.
